Il rimorchio che la stava trasportando, insieme con un’altra, si è in seguito ribaltato e ci sono volute diverse ore perché fosse riparato.
Entrambe le giraffe sono state trasferite da un veterinario, ma una era già morta al suo arrivo, secondo la Società Nazionale per la prevenzione della crudeltà sugli animali (Nspca). Il corpo dei diritti degli animali del Sudafrica sta investigando su quanto accaduto.
Su Twitter l’incidente ha generato grande scalpore. Thinus Botha ha cinguettato che stava guidando proprio dietro al camion quando l’animale ha colpito di testa il Garsfontein Bridge. “C’era un sacco di sangue”, ha postato.
Il manager di Nspca, Rick Allen, ha confermato che la giraffa ha preso un brutto colpo alla testa, ma ha detto che un’autopsia sarà necessario per determinare le cause della morte.
Gli animali erano diretti a una fattoria a Warmbarths, circa 160 km fuori Johannesburg.
